The South Asia Council is one of three regional councils affiliated with the Canadian Asian Studies Association. It brings together and represents the views of scholars, policy-makers, students, and activists who are members of CASA and are interested in the academic study of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and the South Asian diaspora.
The SAC participates in the biennial conferences organised by the Canadian Asian Studies Association. The South Asia Council has historically also administered the best dissertation award in Humanities and Social Sciences for scholars who are Canadian citizens and/or who have been granted their doctoral degrees in Canadian Universities.
