Professor of Asian Studies

University College Cork (UCC) seeks an outstanding appointee for the full-time permanent position of Professor (Scale 2) of Asian Studies, with expertise in East Asia and preferably in the social scientific study of Contemporary China. You will be joining a dynamic young department, with the opportunity to play a significant role in strengthening UCC’s position as a centre of excellence for Asian Studies.
Asian Studies at UCC has expanded rapidly since its establishment in the College of Arts Celtic Studies & Social Sciences in 2006, with well-developed teaching and research programmes across a range of disciplines, a research emphasis on contemporary China and emerging strengths in the study of Japan, Korea and other parts of Asia. As the only centre of its kind in Ireland, the School of Asian Studies plays a significant role in fostering language and cultural skills and advanced knowledge and understanding of Asia in Ireland and beyond and in promoting international exchange and collaborative ventures with partners in Asia and worldwide.
Asian Studies offers a wide range of programmes including the BA in Chinese Studies, BComm (International) Chinese Studies, MA in Asian Studies, MBS Asian Business and MA in Contemporary Chinese Culture and Business. Asian Studies will be offered as a strand within the BA(Hons) and in the BA(Hons) International (including a year abroad) from 2013.
The appointee will be a scholar of international standing, with a doctorate or equivalent in Asian Studies, a significant track-record of sustained peer-reviewed publications and the capacity to attract high-calibre research students to UCC. A proven record of securing substantial funding for research is required. As well as providing academic leadership, the appointee will contribute to the development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and contribute to PhD supervision.

The salary scale (new entrants) for this post is €96,382 – €112,759 per annum.
